CAN YOU HEAR IT?
THE PLANET IS CALLING.
the echo network combines collaboration and science to put community needs first for sustainable development.
Our science listens with an open heart...

Listening that builds understanding. Knowledge that enables action. Communities of practice that create change.
the echo network was founded in 2019 by Dr Shannon Olsson on a simple insight: the gap between environmental challenges and sustainable development isn’t a lack of knowledge, but a lack of communication. Her community-first, knowledge-circularity approach connects academics, researchers, students, NGOs, public sectors, and local communities to source challenges, turn them into action, and circulate awareness locally and globally, restoring harmony between people and planet. After Phase I built a thriving knowledge community across disciplines, Phase II is now expanding this model into a distributed network of knowledge embassies across the globe, working toward a safer habitat for all.

YOUR JOURNEY WITH THE ECHO NETWORK
Share what you already have. Gain what no one can achieve alone.
Participation provides what organisations ordinarily seek separate funding to obtain, without requiring new infrastructure.

For Communities & Organisations
Local organisations, and the communities they serve, name the challenges, participate in project design, and receive the outputs, with visibility across the network.

For Researchers & Decision-Makers
Researchers, policymakers, industry leaders, and practitioners shape community-grounded research and access trained student capacity, field sites, research facilities, and uptake pathways.

For Universities & Students
Academic institutions transform existing coursework into community-grounded research and real-world training for accreditation and student opportunities, as well as policy, commercial, and academic outputs.

Knowledge Circularity
Sustainable solutions emerge when diverse actors learn to listen to one another, align around shared goals, and continuously exchange knowledge.
Knowledge circularity connects scientific knowledge to societal needs, positioning communities as co-creators of knowledge and young leaders as its Ambassadors. We source needs directly from communities through local implementation partners they trust. We then shape those needs into research questions through cross-sector consortia in our global network, and combine scientific evidence with lived experience to generate new targeted knowledge through student Ambassadors who create awareness, synthesise knowledge, and innovate. We return that knowledge in accessible, actionable forms to help communities, practitioners, and institutions apply it to real-world challenges. Application generates questions, insights, and evidence, feeding back into the process. When knowledge circulates, science becomes more responsive, and shared learning leads to lasting change.
Learn What We DoSAGE
The engine that drives the cycle: a real-world sustainability bootcamp
The Sustainability Ambassadors Global Engagement (SAGE) Programme drives our knowledge circularity model. Through experiential learning, interdisciplinary collaboration, and community engagement, students explore how complex challenges connect across people, systems, and environments. Students create awareness, synthesise knowledge across disciplines, and innovate new knowledge and products as part of existing courses, internships, and theses. Through SAGE, students develop the skills to think systemically and connect knowledge with real-world action. In turn, they join a lifelong alumni programme and talent pipeline through which graduates have gone on to further training, scholarships, fellowships, and jobs.

TESTIMONIALS
“Leveraging the power of a ‘network effect’ is critical to catalysing and mainstreaming urgent actions required to improve quality of life - from clean air to building resilience against climate change impacts. As we continue to work together, kudos to the Echo network for your stewardship in nurturing communities that inform, act, and care - and for fostering a culture of listening to each other rather than just talking past each other.”

Chief Executive Officer at Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW)
“To me the echo network is a place of hope, understanding, and action. It is a platform that connects and engages passionate people across many fields with the natural world around us. As a trainee in the SAGE program, I was given the opportunity to not only witness critical real-world sustainability challenges and their consequences, but to work as part of an awesome diverse and interdisciplinary team of young scientists to develop real solutions.”

LEADERSHIP TEAM
PROF. SHANNON B OLSSON
FOUNDER AND GLOBAL DIRECTOR
All life on Earth interacts through the language of chemistry. Prof. Shannon B Olsson is a chemical ecologist who listens to nature’s chemical conversations across India’s diverse ecosystems. A Fulbright Scholar, Ramanujan and INK Fellow, Shannon’s research has been featured by CNN, Inverse, Cosmos, TEDx, Syntalk, Sci-Illustrate, Dublin Science Gallery, V&A London, Chemical and Engineering News, and the DST Science Express train.
Her love for nature’s communication is what brought her to conceptualise the echo network with the Principal Scientific Adviser in 2018. Echo represents the two things Shannon enjoys most – Nature and Communication.
Shannon loves spending time with her two loves – her husband Petter, and her daughter Grace. They teach her the meaning of empathy and trust every day.
